Enhanced Guard & Enhanced Block: The Hidden Defense Inputs Nobody Talks About

The official controls screen lists Enhanced Guard (RT+LT) and Enhanced Block (RT+Y) — but neither is explained anywhere, and Enhanced Guard shows no visible indicator at all. What do they actually do?

TestingThe Question

Enhanced Guard (RT+LT) verifiably drains stamina while plain guard doesn't — so what does that stamina buy? And what does Enhanced Block (RT+Y) do?

How to test: Side-by-side pairs in Shootaround or a friendly: defend the same drive with LT alone vs RT+LT and compare contain, slide speed, and the ballhandler's success; contest the same shot with Y vs RT+Y and compare jump height, reach, and block rate. Watch the stamina bar during both — RT is the turbo modifier everywhere else, so drain is the first tell. Log repeatable differences, not one-offs.

Here’s a fun one: the game’s own controls screen lists two defensive inputs — Enhanced Guard (RT + LT) and Enhanced Block (RT + Y) — that appear in no official guide, no patch note, and no tutorial. We only confirmed they exist by reading the controls legend itself (July 22, 2026). Even players deep into the game haven’t noticed them: holding Enhanced Guard produces no visible indicator whatsoever — no icon, no stance change we’ve spotted, nothing.

So what are they?

What we actually know

  • The inputs are official. Both appear on the in-game Defense controls screen: Enhanced Block is RT + Y, Enhanced Guard is RT + LT (R2 + Triangle / R2 + L2 on PlayStation). That’s the entire documented record.
  • RT is the turbo modifier everywhere else. Sprint is RT, a turbo dunk is RT + X. So “Enhanced” is plausibly The Run’s pattern of turbo-charging an action — spend energy, get a stronger version.
  • Enhanced Guard has no tell. Unlike the clamp (where your player visibly locks into a stance), adding RT shows nothing obvious. Either the effect is subtle (numbers, not animation), or it only manifests situationally.

What’s confirmed so far

✓ Verified in-game (July 22, 2026): Enhanced Guard drains stamina. Holding RT + LT visibly burns the stamina bar — while the plain LT guard costs nothing. That’s a big deal on its own: it confirms Enhanced Guard is a real, functioning turbo-defense mechanic with a genuine cost, not a leftover binding. The game is charging you for something.

The hypotheses still open

  1. What does the stamina buy on Enhanced Guard? Stronger contain, quicker lateral slides, or a bigger effect on the ballhandler while held. Test the same 1-on-1 drive with LT alone vs RT+LT, repeatedly — the cost is proven; the payoff is the mystery.
  2. Enhanced Block = bigger contest? More jump height, longer reach, or a wider timing window than plain Y — and does it drain stamina like Enhanced Guard does? Same shot, same spot, both versions, count the swats and watch the bar.
  3. The null-benefit hypothesis: now much weaker for Enhanced Guard (a pure cost with zero payoff would be strange design), but still worth ruling out with clean side-by-sides — and still fully open for Enhanced Block.

How to help

Run the side-by-sides from the methodology above and drop what you see in the Evidence Locker — platform-tagged, with clips if you can. The bar for Confirmed is repeatable, observable difference (or repeatable absence of one). Wrong inputs and invented effects are how bad info spreads; measured pairs are how this moves from mystery to documented.

Related: the clamp / guard basics on the controls page, stamina mechanics (if the stamina-trade hypothesis holds, these two systems are linked), and jump height (if Enhanced Block changes contest height, that experiment’s methodology applies here too).

Frequently asked

Q. What does Enhanced Guard do in NBA The Run?

Partially confirmed: holding Enhanced Guard (RT + LT / R2 + L2) verifiably drains your stamina bar, while the plain LT guard stance costs nothing (verified in-game July 22, 2026). That confirms it's a real turbo-defense mechanic — but what the stamina actually buys (stronger contain? quicker slides? a bigger effect on the ballhandler?) is still unmapped, and there's no visible indicator while holding it. That benefit side is what this Lab thread is testing.

Q. What does Enhanced Block do in NBA The Run?

Also unconfirmed. The input is RT + Y (R2 + Triangle) per the official controls screen. The natural guess is a stronger or higher contest than a plain Y block — bigger jump, more reach, or a wider block window — likely at a stamina cost. No official description exists; community side-by-side tests will settle it.
