What charges a player's In the Zone meter fastest — dunks, dimes, tricks, or buckets — and how long does the active window really last?
How to test: Start from an empty meter and perform only one action type with one player until it fills; count reps. Time the active window from activation (L3+R3) to expiry with a stopwatch. (Whether multiple Zones can run at once is already answered: yes — see below.)
Aug 10, 2026: the official patch notes increased movement speed while In The Zone — the first dev confirmation that the Zone carries a speed boost at all. How large it is, and whether power/stamina get the same treatment, is still unmeasured (the open stopwatch test below).
Correction — July 22, 2026: an earlier version of this page (and our ability pages) described In the Zone as a shared team meter. That’s wrong. Each player charges their own meter — confirmed in-game. This is exactly the kind of catch The Lab exists for; the sections below reflect the corrected model.
Your Own Meter, Not a Team Bar
The “In the Zone” meter is the closest thing NBA The Run has to a super move, and the key detail is that every player charges their own. Your good plays fill your meter — a dunk by your center doesn’t tick up your guard’s bar. In 3v3 that means you’re really managing up to three separate takeover windows, and the player whose signature ability you most want online is the player whose meter you should be feeding.
How It Fills
The official tips spell out what charges it: tricks, dunks, dimes, and buckets. The flashier and more effective the play, the faster that player’s meter climbs — the game actively rewards flair. Chain a dribble trick into a dime into a bucket and you’ll see the meter jump. Defensive plays feed it too — the launch tuning notes explicitly reduced the Zone reward on shoves, which only makes sense if stops were charging it in the first place.
The Aura Stat = That Player’s Charge Rate
Look at the 13th rating on every player card: Aura. It’s the one stat that isn’t about scoring, defending, or athleticism — it’s understood to be how fast that player’s own meter fills. A crowned (maxed) Aura gets that character’s takeover online noticeably sooner and more often than a low-Aura player making the same plays. The squad-building consequence is direct: Aura is worth the most on the carrier whose ability actually swings games for you — a crowned Aura on your Deep Threat sniper or Dropping Dimes hub means that window comes around again and again. (Under the old shared-meter misread, a high-Aura role player could act as a “zone battery” for the team — with per-player meters, that role doesn’t exist.)
What You Get: ~30 Seconds of Heightened Play
Once a player’s meter is full, trigger it for about 30 seconds of heightened play. During that window their physical stats — speed, power, and stamina — are boosted, and just as importantly their signature Zone ability comes online. It’s a momentum-swing button: pop it during a defensive stand or a scoring run to tilt the next half-minute heavily in your favor.
Signature Zone Abilities
Every character has their own Zone ability, which is what makes whose meter you feed a real decision. Confirmed examples from the official tips:
- Dropping Dimes — boosts the carrier’s own Passes rating and Speed, and any teammate who scores off their pass gets a Shots-rating boost. Built around elite passers.
- Deep Threat — extends your shooting range and reduces the effectiveness of guard (perimeter defense) ratings. A green light to bomb from deep. See Hotspots for how this stretches your range dot.
- Paint Patrol — increases your block rating and posterize chance, and extends the knockdown time of opponents by 1.5x. A defensive and rim-protection swing.
The full per-character list has since been mapped — all 46 players on the roster carry one of 12 distinct Zone abilities, so the three above are simply the ones the official tips called out. See the Abilities browser for the complete set and who runs each one.
When to Pop It
Timing is everything. Save a full meter for a moment it actually swings: a defensive ability like Paint Patrol when the opponent is attacking the rim, or a shooting ability like Deep Threat when you’ve got a hot hand and a green spot. Each meter takes real effort to fill, so wasting one early in a blowout — or hoarding it until the game’s already decided — both cost you.
✓ Answered — verified in-game (July 22, 2026): with per-player meters, Zones stack. Two or even all three of your players can have their takeovers active at the same time — each meter and activation is fully individual. That makes stagger-vs-stack a real strategic call: detonate multiple full meters together for one overwhelming possession, or space them out to keep a signature ability live all game. Still open for this thread: exact charge rates per action type, and the true length of the active window.

Frequently asked
Q. How do you fill the In the Zone meter in NBA The Run?
Each player builds their own meter by playing well — tricks, dunks, dimes, and made buckets all add charge, with bigger, flashier plays filling it faster.
Q. How long does In the Zone last?
Roughly 30 seconds of heightened play once you trigger it. During that window your physical stats — speed, power, and stamina — are boosted and your character's signature Zone ability is active.
Q. Is the In the Zone meter shared by the whole team?
No — that's a common early misread (and an earlier version of this page repeated it). Each player charges their own meter with their own play. When a character's meter is full, triggering it gives the boost plus that character's unique Zone ability, and the Aura rating is that player's personal charge rate.
Q. What are the signature Zone abilities?
Each character has their own — the roster's 46 players share 12 distinct abilities, all verified from the in-game cards. Examples: Dropping Dimes (boosts the passer's own Passes and Speed, and the receiver gets a Shots boost off the feed), Deep Threat (extends shooting range and weakens guard ratings), and Paint Patrol (boosts blocks, posterize chance, and extends knockdown time 1.5x).
Q. What does the Aura stat do in NBA The Run?
Aura is understood to be a player's In the Zone charge rate — how quickly their own good plays fill their own meter. A player with a high or crowned (maxed) Aura gets their signature ability online more often, which is why Aura matters most on the carriers whose Zone you actually want to use.
Q. Can two players have In the Zone active at the same time?
Yes — verified in-game (July 22, 2026): two or even all three of your squadmates can run their Zones simultaneously. Each player's meter and activation is fully individual, so stacking multiple takeovers into one possession is a real strategy.
