August 10 Update: LeBron Jumps to #2, the Rookies Get Trimmed, and Goaltending Gets Nerfed
We re-read all 46 cards. LeBron gains three bars, a crowned aura, and Dropping Dimes — vaulting to S tier and #2 on our power rankings. All three July rookies were nerfed (Dybantsa hardest: four bars down, out of S tier). Giannis swaps to Amped Up. Rim-camping survives its nerf — LeBron can still eat shots at the rim. Every stated change vs. what the cards actually show, in one table.
Official August 10 patch notesThe August 10 update is live — the biggest balance pass since launch, plus the first slice of the season feature list. Per our per-patch ritual, we re-photographed and re-read all 46 player cards: 40 reproduced their July bars exactly, and the only six that moved are the six the official notes name. Here’s everything, stated vs. seen.
The headline: LeBron is a different card now
LeBron picked up steals 2→3, stamina 4→5, and a crowned aura, and his Zone ability moved from Going Off to Dropping Dimes (boosted passes and speed, and every teammate catching his pass gets a Shots boost). The notes also buff his threes and handles and nerf his blocks, but none of those flipped a bar — they moved under the hood.
On our computed board that adds up: LeBron rises to S tier at #2 overall (87.4), behind only Giannis (92). The engine’s read: a crowned-aura playmaker with maxed stamina who makes his teammates shoot better is the second-best card in the game.
Giannis swapped Zone abilities too — Posterizer out, Amped Up in (Speed, Stamina, Power, Jump Height). His bars didn’t move; his #1 didn’t either.
What the notes didn’t say
This is why we re-read every card instead of transcribing patch notes. Two changes are on LeBron’s card that the official notes don’t spell out:
- Rebounds 3→4 — never mentioned. Not in the buff list, not in the nerf list, but the bar moved. Maybe an omission, maybe the systemic rebounder-jump-height increase baked into his card — either way, it’s real and the notes are silent on it.
- The aura buff landed as a crown. The notes just say “aura” went up; his bar was already maxed at 5, so the buff arrived as gold — a patch-granted crown, the same rare event as Brunson’s three new crowns in July. Crowns aren’t cosmetic on our board: crowned aura means the fastest Zone-charge tier in the game.
And the reverse holds too: five stated changes are invisible on the cards (LeBron’s threes/handles/blocks, Brown’s twos, Boozer’s stamina/rebounds, Peterson’s handles — full table below). The bars are coarse buckets; the truth lives partly underneath, and the Lab’s patch thread is where the community pins down whether those hidden moves are feelable.
The other 40 cards? Bar-for-bar identical to July. We checked every one — that’s the verification that makes the six changes above trustworthy.
The rookie correction
All three July rookies were trimmed in their second month — day-one rookie cards evidently shipped hot:
- AJ Dybantsa took the hardest hit: threes, handles, steals, and aura each down a bar — all four stated, all four visible. He falls from S tier (#2 at debut) to A tier, #10.
- Cameron Boozer: threes 5→4 visible; the stated stamina and rebounds nerfs moved hidden values under still-full bars. S → A tier (#11).
- Darryn Peterson: stamina 5→4 visible; the stated handles nerf is invisible under a still-maxed bar. Stays A tier (#26).
Jaylen Brown went the other way: Guard 4→5 on the card, plus a stated twos buff that can’t show — his twos bar was already maxed. Bars are buckets; the buff lives underneath.
Stated vs. what the cards show
| Player | The notes say | Visible on the card |
|---|---|---|
| LeBron James | stamina, 3PT, handles, steals, aura ↑ · blocks ↓ | steals +1, stamina +1, aura crowned, rebounds +1 (unstated) · 3PT/handles/blocks unchanged |
| Jaylen Brown | 2PT, guard ↑ | guard +1 · 2PT already maxed |
| AJ Dybantsa | 3PT, handles, steals, aura ↓ | all four −1 |
| Cameron Boozer | stamina, 3PT, rebounds ↓ | 3PT −1 · stamina/rebounds unchanged |
| Darryn Peterson | stamina, handles ↓ | stamina −1 · handles unchanged |
| Giannis | Zone ability reassigned | Amped Up confirmed · bars unchanged |
The invisible half of that table is now an open Lab thread — same-bar comparisons are how the community can establish whether the hidden moves are feelable.
The goaltending nerf
Rim-camping — parking your blocker under the basket to eat shots on the way down instead of contesting the shooter — took the patch’s biggest strategic hit. The devs “extended near hoop dead zone and reduced block jump height boost” specifically to curtail it: a geometry change, not a rule change. Still no whistle, still legal — just a smaller window right at the hoop.
And the nerf didn’t kill it: our first post-patch sessions confirm LeBron can still meet shots on the way down. The window shrank; it didn’t close. How much it shrank — and whether it now takes elite blocks and height to pull off — is the open measurement in the Lab thread. The same notes increased rebounder jump height and improved dunk consistency, so inside play got a real shake-up all around.
Also in the defensive pass: steals nerfed for a third time (harder after pump fakes; intercept angle, reach, and speed all reduced) and blocking from behind the shooter was toned down.
Features: leaderboards and the Emoji Wheel
- Leaderboards for KO Squads and KO Solos — wins, win %, trophies, blocks, dunks, threes
- Emoji Wheel for comms — in the player-select lobby only, from what we can tell so far; we haven’t found a way to use it mid-game
- 2026–27 season jerseys — new looks for LeBron, Giannis, LaMelo, Ja, and Jaylen Brown, and Booker’s #15. Same teams all around (we checked the cards)
- Simplified Chinese localization, updated nameplates
September: the season proper
The announcement re-scopes the Summer Heat bundle to September: five NBA Legends, the All the Fire ruleset, the NYC court now named Dyckman Park, Practice Mode, Drive Camera, and a Championship Belt. It’s on the roadmap.
Every rating above comes from the re-read cards — the tier list, power rankings, compare pages, and Crew Builder are already recomputed from them.
