Scouting Report

Strengths

  • +Already elite three-point shooting off the dribble
  • +Quick, shifty handles for a rookie
  • +Carries an Ankle Breaker Zone ability

Weaknesses

  • –Thin defensive profile this early in his career
  • –Less polished than the modern maxed-out version

This is Curry before the crown from deep — the 2009-10 rookie out of Davidson, built as a shifty creator first. The handle is the headline: a crowned 5, a maxed dribble. Pair that with 5 speed and a 5 from three, and rookie Steph is a downhill blur who can also pull up clean. He shoots it (5 threes, 4 twos, 4 passes) but it’s the ball on a string that separates this card.

The modern Curry is a stationary-relocation shooter with Deep Threat; this throwback flips it. He’s a slasher-creator who happens to shoot — no crown from deep yet, but a crowned handle the current version doesn’t carry. The cost is the same one that follows Steph everywhere: 2 on guard, 2 power, 2 boards, 1 blocks. He’ll cook a defender off the bounce and get hunted right back, so he wants cover behind him.

In the Zone: Ankle Breaker. Fitting — his weapon is the dribble, and this is the dribble takeover. A full meter bumps his already-crowned handle and lets even his base tricks put a defender on the floor, cracking open a clean lane or a wide pull-up. With a crowned aura (one of the fastest charge rates on the board), he gets to that window fast and often. Isolate, chain a hesi into the cross, and punish the stumble.

Run him with a stopper and a rim threat. Put a real point-of-attack defender next to him to patch the 2 on guard, and a downhill finisher to cash the lanes he breaks open — his crowned handle does the creating, someone else does the dunking.
