Rookie Variant
Kevin Durant (2007-08)
The Sonics rookie scorer, all length and pull-up before the titles.
Strengths
- +Effortless mid-range and pull-up scoring
- +Length and speed that create shots over anyone
- +Going Off Zone ability for scoring runs
Weaknesses
- –Slender rookie frame with low power
- –Not yet the lockdown defender he would become
This is the Sonics teenager — all length, all bucket, before the rings. The throwback Durant scores at every level the same way the current card does, but the card already tells you he was a shot-maker first: a crowned 5 on twos, a 5 from deep, maxed handles, and 5 stamina to keep firing all game. He rises into a clean mid-range jumper over anyone and pulls up from three without blinking. Where this variant breaks from the version he’d become is on the edges — 3 power and 2 rebounds for the slim early-career frame, a 3 on guard before he turned into a stopper. He gets a shot off over you; he just won’t bully you to get it.
The other thing that pops off this card: a crowned 5 aura. That’s among the fastest Zone charges on the roster, so rookie KD’s signature is live sooner and more often than most.
In the Zone: Going Off. It lifts his whole offensive toolbox at once — shooting, dunks, handles, passing — so during the window there’s no right way to guard him. Sag and he greens the pull-up; crowd him and he drives or whips it to the open man. With a crowned aura feeding it, you’ll be triggering this a lot.
Run him with a defender and a rebounder to cover the two holes the card admits. A rim-protecting big who cleans the glass lets rookie KD live on the perimeter and hunt his own shot — exactly what those 4 blocks of his can’t do alone down low.
