In the Zone Ability
Deep Threat
Reduces the distance and guard penalties on shots, so contested deep looks still fall while In the Zone.
What Deep Threat does
Deep Threat is the signature shooting Zone Ability in NBA The Run, carried by the game’s purest snipers — Devin Booker, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, street sharpshooter Destiny “DJ” Jackson, and — new in the July 21 drop — rookie Darryn Peterson. When the carrier enters the Zone it does two things at once: it reduces the distance penalty on shots, pushing effective range out further than normal, and it cuts the guard penalty so a defender’s contest matters far less. The result is a shooter who can launch from well beyond the arc and still knock it down with a hand in their face.
Because it attacks contest effectiveness rather than simply adding raw accuracy, Deep Threat is most devastating against squads that rely on tight on-ball perimeter pressure — that pressure matters far less while the ability is live.
How to use it
When Deep Threat is up, hunt any look from range, contested or not. Pull up in transition, fire off a screen, or rise over a closeout; the usual penalty for a tough shot is blunted. You can watch it work in real time on the range dot under your feet — spots that normally read orange or red flip warm while it’s live (Curry’s dot has been observed staying makeable out to the far rim with it active). It is also a spacing weapon — defenders have to respect the carrier deep, which cracks open driving and passing lanes for the rest of the squad. Pair a Deep Threat shooter with a passer running Dropping Dimes and you stack two buffs on one possession: catch the dish, then cash a deep one that was already easier to make.
The In the Zone meter
Deep Threat comes online through the carrier’s own In the Zone meter — each player charges theirs with their own play: tricks, dunks, dimes and buckets, with bigger highlight plays filling it faster (the Aura rating is that player’s personal charge rate). When the meter is full, activate the Zone with L3+R3 for roughly 30 seconds of boosted speed, power and stamina plus the signature ability. Position the carrier before you pop it — activating while they’re out of position or gassed wastes part of the window.
Both the effect text and the carrier list here are verified verbatim from the in-game player-select cards — including the July 21 rookie, whose card was captured and read day-one.
